Why Meditate? Ditch the Stereotypes and Find Your Calm

meditation Sep 10, 2024

My thoughts are always racing, I can’t sit cross-legged to save my life, and sitting still? That’s like asking a cat to take a bath! (Unless, of course, it’s for binging Netflix instead of sleeping. In that case, I’m a total pro.)

I used to think meditation wasn’t for me. Every time someone mentioned it, I pictured a serene monk under a Bodhi tree or someone draped in crystals. I thought meditation would make me lose my edge.

Thanks, media! You had me believing it was some mystical, woo-woo practice meant only for the super spiritual.

Spoiler alert: Meditation isn’t just for monks or crystal enthusiasts. It’s a practical, down-to-earth tool that anyone—even the busiest of us—can use to find calm in their lives. You don’t have to sit like a pretzel or chant anything (unless that’s your jam).

When we meditate, we’re not just sitting still. We’re learning how to reduce stress, calm our minds and bodies, improve sleep, feel happier, and even get along better with the people around us.

What exactly is meditation?

There are countless definitions of meditation out there, but one that resonated with me is this: Meditation is the intentional practice of bringing ourselves back to the present moment through focused attention.

This explanation made meditation feel more accessible. It wasn’t about emptying my mind or achieving a mystical state—it’s about guiding the mind toward compassionate, non-judgmental awareness and inner peace, whether silent, guided, or even walking.

That understanding changed everything for me, and I’m excited to share my experience with meditation—because if I can meditate, I truly believe anyone can.

How Meditation Worked for Me

I first turned to meditation to quiet my overactive mind and just breathe. It was like hitting pause on life, giving me the space to slow down and rethink how I approached everything.

At first, I thought I was doing it wrong because my mind didn’t go blank, and thoughts kept popping up. But then I realised: Meditation isn’t about turning off your brain. It’s about becoming a friendly observer of your thoughts, letting them float by without judgment.

Over time, I began to understand my thoughts better, which helped me make changes aligned with my values. Life started to feel less like a hamster wheel and more like something I could truly enjoy.

The more I meditated, the more I wanted to keep going.

Like any skill, meditation takes practice, but with time, I became more connected with the wiser, calmer part of myself. (And trust me, it felt way better than being the human "yes" button, agreeing to every extra task at work that drained my energy!)

Meditation brought me clarity. I began approaching stressful situations with a clear, calm mindset, and soon enough, I noticed joy in the little things. Gratitude crept back into my life, and, dare I say it, I was having more fun.

Why Meditation is a Game-Changer for Busy Professionals

Meditation is like a secret weapon for busy people. There’s plenty of research showing how incorporating meditation into your daily routine unlocks powerful benefits:

  • Reduced Stress: Meditation helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone), leaving you feeling more relaxed and at ease.
  • Better Sleep: Meditating before bed can improve sleep quality, helping you wake up feeling refreshed.
  • Increased Focus: Meditation enhances concentration, so you can get more done in less time.
  • Emotional Balance: You'll become less reactive, leading to better relationships and a more positive outlook on life.

How to Get Started with Meditation

Ready to give meditation a try? Here’s how you can start:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed.
  2. Sit Comfortably: No need for fancy poses—just get comfy.
  3. Focus on Your Breath: Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. Feel the air entering and leaving your body.
  4. Observe Your Thoughts: When thoughts pop up (and they will!), simply observe them without judgment and gently bring your focus back to your breath.
  5. Start Small: Just a few minutes a day is enough to begin. Gradually increase the time as you feel more comfortable.

There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to meditate. The key is to make it a regular part of your routine and enjoy the journey.

If you're just starting out, guided meditation is great because it provides clear direction, helping you stay focused and making it easier to relax without wondering if you're "doing it right."
