Why Self-Care Can Help You Work Smarter, Not Harder
Oct 02, 2024
For the longest time, I thought stress was just part of the deal.
If I wasn’t stressed, wasn’t overwhelmed, I figured I wasn’t working hard enough.
Stress became my badge of honour—proof that I was pushing myself, juggling it all, and staying on top of things. Sound familiar?
It was the same story at work, too. Every time I asked someone how they were, the answer was always the same: "busy."
And honestly, I was right there with them.
As a driven person, I value my career and my family. I prided myself on handling it all, rarely questioning whether this constant pressure was sustainable.
In fact, sometimes the stress even fuelled me, convincing me to keep pushing harder.
But over time, I started noticing the cracks. My energy was drained, my focus blurred, and my sleep? Non-existent. I was literally running on fumes.
And that’s when it hit me—this hustle, this constant stress—it wasn’t a badge of honour anymore.
It was a RED FLAG. 🚩
If I wanted to thrive in both my career and family life, I needed to find a new way of working, one that didn’t leave me feeling exhausted and burned out.
The Myth of Stress as Success
In today’s fast-paced world, stress often feels inevitable, and truthfully, not all stress is bad. In fact, stress can be a great motivator, helping us rise to challenges and perform at our best when it’s temporary or manageable.
The problem isn’t stress itself—it’s constant, unchecked stress that takes a toll on our energy and well-being.
The Real Meaning of Working Smarter
To me, working smarter isn’t just about productivity hacks or time management tricks. It means taking care of yourself along the way. This means giving yourself permission to rest, pause, and recharge.
When we prioritise self-care, we can better manage the ebbs and flows of stress, using it to fuel motivation rather than letting it overwhelm us.
It may be tempting to push through the signals from your body—like grogginess or lack of focus—with something artificial like caffeine or sugary snacks. But if you support your body with self-care instead, you'll naturally feel refreshed and renewed.
Treat Yourself to Self-Care
Self-care goes beyond the occasional mani-pedi or massage. While those are great examples of taking time for yourself, to truly reap the benefits, you need to commit to a routine that nourishes all areas of your life.
Here’s what self-care can look like across different aspects of life:
- Physical Body: Sleep, exercise, healthy eating, regular checkups, and outdoor time.
- Emotional & Mental State: Hobbies, laughter, journaling, reading, and routines.
- Spiritual Beliefs: Meditation, nature walks, yoga, gratitude, and quiet reflection.
- Relationship to Self: Positive self-talk, goal setting, alone time, and celebrating your successes.
- Relationship to Others: Quality time with family and friends, clear communication, and shared activities.
- Work: Setting boundaries, learning new skills, taking time off, and self-advocacy.
The key is recognising which areas need attention and making self-care a consistent part of your routine. What works for you may change over time, and that’s okay.
Self-care should ebb and flow with the different seasons of your life.
Benefits of Listening to Your Body and Taking Breaks
When you listen to your body and give it the break it needs, the benefits are profound:
- Physical Health: Hormones and blood sugar rebalance, energy levels increase, cells, organs, and tissues repair, and the immune system regulates.
- Mental Health: Stress reduces, productivity improves, creativity increases, and decision-making sharpens.
- Emotional Health: Emotions stabilise, moods boost, perspectives shift, and patience and empathy are heightened.
- Spiritual Health: Interactions bring peace, connections deepen, relationships simplify, and space for self-care opens.
Flipping the Script on Stress
So, what if we flipped the script? Instead of seeing stress as a sign of hard work, let it be a reminder that balance is needed.
Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity to achieve lasting success, both personally and professionally.
The key isn’t eliminating stress but learning to manage it so that it motivates us rather than drains us.
Final Thoughts
Success doesn’t have to mean burnout. It can mean feeling energised, focused, and balanced—inside and out.
The final piece in creating effective self-care rituals is establishing a positive attitude and a determined mindset. By allowing yourself the time and space to practice self-care without negative emotions weighing you down, you and those around you will reap the benefits.
Your energy and enthusiasm for life will shine, and you will begin to attract the people and things in your life that you most desire. 💚
